Mangiarotti SpA, among today's leaders in the production of pressure equipment
Quality and State-of-the-Art Technologies Made in Italy
Made in Italy is almost a must hereabouts. It is not a simple catch phrase but rather the beginning of Paolo Di Salvio's presentation of Mangiarotti SpA, an engineering company founded in 1930 in Codroipo (Udine) which produces pressure vessels for the chemical and petrochemical industries. So what does "made in Italy" mean in the context of this type of business? The answer can be found in the quality of the products. It's true, Di Salvio says, that we are an old style company, in the sense that the industry we work in is not part of the new economy. Here the manual work, precision and dedication of an employee still count.
Yet this is exactly the strong point of the company based in the Friuli region of Italy. When working in the global marketplace, faced with high-calibre competitors, it is the product itself which makes the difference. However, make no mistake: focus on the product does not mean that innovation, research or development of know-how play a lesser part. On the contrary, Mangiarotti SpA combines development and tradition and the results can be seen in the components it produces - components for use in complex systems designed by engineering companies for a variety of industries, including oil, pertochemical and energy. Therefore, the main clients are either engineering companies or end customers (chemical or oil multinationals) spread throughout the world.
Following the transfer of ownership from the Mangiarotti family to two entrepreneurs from Bergamo, the company embarked on a journey of growth which led to the decision to let go of low technology products and instead specialize in products with a high added value. This change brought the company's turnover up from about 40 million euros in 2005 to over 105 million in 2007, with an expected value exceeding 130 million this year. Meanwhile, the order portfolio covers a year and a half of work. The operational headquarters are located in the industrial area of Pannellia di Sedegliano (Udine) along with the main factory of over 25 thousand covered square meters. Two and a half years ago a production facility of 13 thousand covered square meters was completed near the port of the industrial area of Aussa Corno in the town of San Giorgio di Nogaro. This facility, built in thanks to considerable investments made over the past few years (more than 20 million euroes in the last four years most of which have been invested in the plant and machinery), allows for the production and shipment of especially large machinery (up to 100 meters in length and 12 meters in diameter, and up to 1500 tons in weight) thereby permitting Mangiarotti to meet the market demand for this type of equipment.
In recent months, following an analysis of the critical factors for success in this sector and of the competitive positioning of Mangiarotti SpA, strategies to be pursued in the coming years have been defined which will allow the company to position itself among the global leaders in the production of pressure vessels, thereby taking advantage of the favourable moment in the oil and gas market, and preparing to enter into another sector which may one day take the place of this market when it begins its eventual phase of decline. The production of components for this sector, the nuclear industry, represents a higher (and maximum) level compared to current production and yet maintains the core business of the company. Several of the company's most important competitors on a worldwide level are already working with this industry, while other operators similar to Mangiarotti are also moving in that direction.
Di Salvio says that the company identified Ansaldo Camozzi Energy Special Components SpA as a partner. It is a company with head offices in Milan, an associated company of the Camozzi group with headquarters in Brescia, and is operational in various industrial sectors. Mangiarotti bought 70% of its shares at the end of the 2007 financial year and in April of 2008 Ansaldo Camozzi took on the name of Mangiarotti Nuclear SpA. This company represents one of the few companies in the world, and the only one in Italy, in a position to produce special components for nuclear power plants, such as reactors, steam generators and accessories, thanks to its own know-how and the fact that it is a holder of the necessary certifications. It is the results of what was the centre of Italian nuclear production belonging to Ansaldo, concentrated in the Bicocca area of Milan, where about 160 employees work today.
Finally, in order to consolidate the establishment of an important Italian and European production centre for the oil & gas and nuclear industries, the company decided to buy a large area located in Monfalcone near the port, where a production facility is being built especially for machinery of large size and considerable weight, which allow the company to compete with leaders in this sector worldwide. It marks an investment of over 75 million euros in the next three years. This is the mission of a company which uses quality and state-of-the-art technologies as its personal guidelines. Strong and competitive and proud of its own "made in Italy".

Mangiarotti invests in nuclear
The President of the Region, Renzo Tondo, accompanied by the Regional Councillor, Claudio Violino, visited the Mangiarotti works in the Pannellia industrial estate. The guests were received by Mangiarotti S.p.A. chairman and shareholder, Paolo Di Salvio, the vice-chairman, Giorgio Santuz, and Tarcisio Testa, member of the board of directors and shareholder of Mangiarotti SpA, as well as the staff of their closest collaborators.
The chairman, Paolo Di Salvio, provided Tondo with an overview of this engineering company, founded in Codroipo in 1930, which produces pressure equipment for the chemical and petrochemical industry. Following the transfer of ownership in 2005 from the Mangiarotti family to two Bergamo entrepreneurs, the company undertook a path towards growth which led to the abandonment of products with a low technological content in order to specialize in products with a high added value, passing from revenues of 40 million euro in 2005 to revenues of over 105 million euro in 2007, a sum which will exceed 130 million euro this year, while the order books contain work for a year and a half of work.
The company's operational base is at Pannellia, the location of the main works with a covered area of 25 sq.m thousand which since the start of the year has been supported by a production facility at San Giorgio di Nogaro, in the Aussa Corno industrial estate in the port area. This structure will make it possible to build and ship particularly big plants up to 100 metres in lenght, 12 metres in diameter and weighing up to 1500 tonnes.
In particular, the operation carried out by the company for nuclear production was illustrated to President Tondo during the meeting. For this purpose Ansaldo Camozzi, based in Milan, was recognized as a partner and 70% of its shares were purchased. Now maned Mangiarotti Nuclear it is unique in Italy being able to produce special components for nuclear power stations, and employs a workforce of 180. The chronic shortage of specialized workers emerged during the visit and it emerged that a considerable part of the workforce comes for the countries of central Europe. The President of the Region expressed his willngness to find solutions in this regard with the establishment of specific occupational courses.
